Marathon Kids

We are Marathon Kids and we are on a mission to get kids moving. Through running, we show kids they can achieve more than they ever thought possible and put them on the path to healthier lives. Our Marathon Kids work at their own pace to run or walk a total of four marathons, and we provide the training, rewards, tools, and resources to keep them moving. We believe every kid deserves to live a happy, healthy life and that any adult can be empowered and trained to become an inspiring coach.

Attend Austin 10K’r social events to complete miles towards your Marathon Kids training log. Each social event will have its own Marathon Kids family 1-mile route and map. Marathon Kids can earn a special edition armadillo half-mile or one-mile achievement stamp in their training log for participating.  As an additional bonus Marathon Kids headquarters will award prizes for kids with the special edition armadillo achievement stamps on their training logs.  So, start your training and collect those stamps.

Hey Marathon Kids! start collecting your stamps because you can earn special prizes listed below. Prizes can be claimed when attending the final Austin 10K’r social run on Saturday, March 30, 2019 at the Austin American-Statesman from 8am-10am. Bouldin Route Description

map_my_route_17One of Austin’s oldest neighborhoods, Bouldin Creek dates to the turn of the century, with several historic homes dating to that era still standing. Bouldin Creek was home to one of Austin’s most famous voices, the late speaker, writer, and first amendment rights activist John Henry Faulk, whose boyhood residence, the landmark 1894 Victorian mansion of Dr. E.W. Herndon, is now occupied by Green Pastures Restaurant. Other neighborhood notables include Negro League baseball great Willy Wells and UT Tower gunman Charles Whitman. (source Bouldin Creek Neighborhood Association)

The Bouldin route will start at the Austin American-Statesman’s bat viewing area and travel west on Barton Springs Rd. towards Palmer Event Center. One block west of South First St. the route will turn south on Bouldin Ave. Bouldin will head due south until it dead ends at W. Live Oak St. and Green Pastures Restaurant. The route then shifts west one block to S. Fifth St. and continues south down to Galindo Elementary School near Ben White Blvd. We encourage everyone to complete as little or as much as your fitness allows. Route maps have each half-mile labeled so you can u-turn at any time to get an even round-trip distance.

It is our recommendation that participants use sidewalks, pedestrian pathways or hike & bike trails and avoid using the street. There are NO STREET CLOSURES for this route. Participants should obey traffic and pedestrian laws at all times. Please use caution when crossing streets and only cross at designated crosswalks.

Where We’re Going

A Little More About the Events

This week’s event is a special edition to the Austin 10K’r format where we have transplanted our free social run from downtown Austin, out to the Rough Hollow community. This is a great opportunity to run through a little bit of the hill country and explore a new route. The Hot Chocolate ‘n’ Marshmallow run/walk will start and finish at the Highland Village Community Center.

Events are run and walk friendly, variable in distance, free, open to the public and begin and end at Austin American-Statesman. Parking for social runs at the Statesman is Free. On occasion Austin 10K’rs will partner with other organizations for our social run, check each event for detailed instructions. Baby joggers and leashed pets are always welcomed. Event route distances vary between 3-6 miles however, you always have the option to u-turn at any point to match your fitness ability. Event route surfaces will vary from sidewalks and crushed granite to paved pathways and boardwalk. This is a self-guided and self-paced activity. There are no street closures or directional signage marking the route. Each event will incorporate a creative theme that highlights the culture of Austin and the Cap10K. Before each event we will have a short 2-3 minute meet ‘n’ greet with the race staff. Before we start we will review the event route, identify any notable sights to see and answers any questions. Maps, bottled water, high fives and selfies will be shared at each event.

Now that that’s done let’s go run!

Volunteer

The social runs have begun to take off in popularity and we could use an extra set of hands on occasion to prepare the activities for each meeting. Light set-up and clean-up opportunities available for those who want to sandwich their run with volunteering before and after the meet-up. Also, looking for those local yokels who’ve been their-done that, to share their experience for running and walking in Austin. Good directions and insight on local routes always welcomed by novice guests. If you’d like to share your time please email us for more info.
