Wholy Bagel Run – Kinney, Route Description

map_my_route_17The Wholy Bagel Run – Kinney is one of our new routes that combines both city and neighborhood streets with park trail. Starting from the Statesman parking lot the run will kick off passing a familiar statue “Night Wings” on the way down Barton Springs Road. After passing through the dense canopy of pecan trees outside Palmer Events Center the route crosses over South Lamar Blvd. headed towards Zilker Park. At the first traffic light passed Lamar take a left at Uncle Billy’s Brewery & BBQ joint and climb the Kinney Ave. hill (400′ length). At the top, catch your breathe, and continue south in to the heart of the Zilker Neighborhood. It’s a straight shot to the Heather St. where you can u-turn and make it a 4-mile round trip day. If you want loop the course back to the Statesman for a 5-mile trip, hang a right on Heather and travel two blocks to Bluebonnet Lane. The road Bluebonnet Lane will change names to Melridge Pl. then Azie Morton Rd. (formally Robert E. Lee Rd.) but no turns needed. Azie Morton Rd. dead ends at Barton Spring Rd., at this intersection cross Barton Springs Road and catch the trail head that runs parallel to the river. At this point the hike and bike trail will take you 1.5-miles all the way back to the Congress Avenue bridge. Stay on the main trail and keep the lake always on your left and you’ll make it back. (paper maps provided at event).

It is our recommendation that participants use sidewalks, pedestrian pathways or hike & bike trails and avoid using the street. There are NO STREET CLOSURES for this route. Participants should obey traffic and pedestrian laws at all times. Please use caution when crossing streets and only cross at designated cross walks.

Marathon Kids

We are Marathon Kids and we are on a mission to get kids moving. Through running, we show kids they can achieve more than they ever thought possible and put them on the path to healthier lives. Our Marathon Kids work at their own pace to run or walk a total of four marathons, and we provide the training, rewards, tools, and resources to keep them moving. We believe every kid deserves to live a happy, healthy life and that any adult can be empowered and trained to become an inspiring coach.

Attend Austin 10K’r social events to complete miles towards your Marathon Kids training log. Each social event will have its own Marathon Kids family 1-mile route and map. Marathon Kids can earn a special edition armadillo half-mile or one-mile achievement stamp in their training log for participating.  As an additional bonus Marathon Kids headquarters will award prizes for kids with the special edition armadillo achievement stamps on their training logs.  So, start your training and collect those stamps.

Volunteer

The social runs have begun to take off in popularity and we could use an extra set of hands on occasion to prepare the activities for each meeting. Light set-up and clean-up opportunities available for those who want to sandwich their run with volunteering before and after the meet-up. Also, looking for those local yokels who’ve been their-done that, to share their experience for running and walking in Austin. Good directions and insight on local routes always welcomed by novice guests. If you’d like to share your time please email us for more info.
