Statesman Capitol 10K Names Austin Running Community Member Iram J. Leon 2020 Race Ambassador

The Statesman Capitol 10,000, presented by Baylor Scott & White Health, is very pleased to announce Iram J. Leon, president of the Austin Runners Club, as race ambassador for the 43rd race on April 5, 2020.

“The Cap10K is about community and commitment, and who better to represent our 43rd race than inspirational Austin running community member Iram J. Leon,” said Jeff Simecek, Cap10K race director. “We are absolutely thrilled to be connected with a standout runner, leader and person like Iram. After the 42nd race was cancelled due to weather and our team started to break the race components down, Iram joined in. Without being asked, he showed up and joined us in our work. He’s a natural, giving leader who loves the running community and will do whatever he can to support local running events. I knew then that he would be the perfect choice for our next Cap10K ambassador.”

Leon was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2010. Since then, he has pushed through the adversity to create running memories with his daughter, Kiana, participate in marathons and races, including the Cap10K, and inspire others in his active running life with his positive attitude. He has well surpassed the average survival time of four years for the disease; and his tumor remains stable. In 2018, he married Elaine Chung, whom he met through training, in a run-themed wedding. She asked him out after a race; he proposed at the beginning of another. The family has participated in many races together, sometimes competing and sometimes side by side.

“I was flattered when the Statesman Capitol 10,000 asked me to be their ambassador for 2020. But then I only agreed to accept the role if it didn’t prevent me from running a race that is so special to me,” said Leon. “It’s while running the Cap10K that I’ve done gotten my personal fastest times and where I’ve run with friends and family, including my daughter and parents. Each year as a Cap10K participant, I can’t help but look around and smile while warming up, running and cooling down. I smile because for one day each year, for 6.2 miles, we run this town.”

The 2020 race will take place on Sunday, April 5. When registering at Cap10K.com, race participants have the opportunity to personally donate additional money to the beneficiary, which the Statesman will match up to $10,000. The Cap10K is the largest 10K race in Texas and one of the top 10 in the nation. The Cap10K began in 1978 with 3,400 participants. In 2018, the race had 23,265 registered participants.
